PWAs 5 years later – still ”soon to be useful”

Linkedin. Last week, I discussed different ways to build mobile apps with my students: native, cross-platform, hybrid, and the perpetually ”soon to be useful” progressive web apps (PWAs). I had an old slide from five years ago listing some notable examples of PWAs, and I thought I should update the screenshot.

Spotting the differences is left as an exercise for the reader.

The main value proposition of PWAs is that they work on both platforms, but as long as Apple continues to hold them back, nothing changes. It remains to be seen which technological breakthrough will arrive first: fully functional PWAs or fusion power.

When it comes to native app development, cross-platform tools seem to be the default option these days.

Recently, I’ve been asking developers how they view the situation between React Native and Flutter. Based on GitHub and Stack Overflow activity, Flutter is already more widely used than React Native. However, it’s still difficult to find public references of major Flutter apps, both in Finland and abroad.

Please let me know if you have any good examples!
